How to Connect ChatGPT to Social Media Using Custom Actions & OAuth 2.0

Turn ChatGPT into your autonomous social media manager. Learn how to connect a Custom GPT to LinkedIn, X, and Instagram using OAuth 2.0 and AutoPoster AI.

Millions of people use ChatGPT every day to write LinkedIn updates, brainstorm Twitter threads, and craft Instagram captions.

But until recently, that workflow ended with copying text out of ChatGPT and manually posting it into social media scheduling tools.

With ChatGPT Custom Actions and OAuth 2.0, you can transform ChatGPT from a brainstorming partner into an active social media manager. You can prompt ChatGPT in plain English:

"Schedule a LinkedIn post about our new feature launch for tomorrow at 10 AM, and write an accompanying short tweet for X."

ChatGPT connects directly to your AutoPoster AI workspace, formats the copy, handles character limits, and schedules the post across both networks—without you ever leaving the chat interface.

Here is the step-by-step tutorial on how to set it up in under 5 minutes.

How ChatGPT Custom Actions Work

ChatGPT Custom Actions allow a Custom GPT to make authenticated HTTP requests to external web services.

When you configure an Action with AutoPoster AI:

  1. OpenAPI Schema: Tells ChatGPT which tools are available (listing accounts, drafting posts, scheduling, checking status).
  2. OAuth 2.0 Authentication: Prompts you with an official AutoPoster consent window to approve which workspace ChatGPT can access.
  3. Automatic API Key Generation: Once you approve, AutoPoster mints a secure token for ChatGPT so you never have to copy-paste raw secrets into a prompt.

Step 1: Create a Custom GPT in ChatGPT

  1. Open ChatGPT and make sure you have a ChatGPT Plus, Team, or Enterprise subscription.
  2. Click Explore GPTs in the sidebar, then click + Create (or go to chatgpt.com/gpts/editor).
  3. In the Configure tab:
    • Name: AutoPoster Social Manager
    • Description: Drafts, schedules, and manages posts across my social media accounts.
    • Instructions:
You are an expert social media manager powered by AutoPoster AI.
When the user asks to post or schedule content:
      1. First call listAccounts to see which social channels are available.
      2. Call getRules if needed to verify platform character limits and formats.
      3. Suggest draft copy tailored to each target platform.
      4. Always confirm the accounts and scheduled time with the user before publishing.
      5. Use createPost to schedule or draft the post.

Step 2: Add the Custom Action

Scroll down to the bottom of the Configure tab and click Create new action.

1. Import OpenAPI Schema

In the Schema box, you can either click Import from URL and enter:

https://agent.autoposter.ai/openapi.json

Or paste the raw JSON schema. ChatGPT will automatically parse all available endpoints:

  • listAccounts (GET /v1/accounts)
  • getRules (GET /v1/rules)
  • createPost (POST /v1/posts)
  • listPosts (GET /v1/posts)
  • getPost (GET /v1/posts/{id})
  • publishPost (POST /v1/posts/{id}/publish)

2. Configure Authentication (OAuth 2.0)

Under Authentication, select OAuth:

  • Client ID: chatgpt
  • Client Secret: chatgpt-public (or leave empty if using PKCE)
  • Authorization URL: https://agent.autoposter.ai/oauth/authorize
  • Token URL: https://agent.autoposter.ai/oauth/token
  • Scope: accounts:read posts:create posts:read rules:read
  • Token Exchange Method: Default (POST request)

Click Save.

Step 3: Connect and Authorize Your Workspace

Now test the connection directly in the ChatGPT Preview panel:

  1. Type in the preview chat:

"Show me my connected social media accounts."

  2. ChatGPT will display an authentication banner: "Log in to agent.autoposter.ai".
  3. Click Log in. A pop-up window opens showing the AutoPoster authorization screen:
    • It shows ChatGPT requesting access to read accounts and create posts.
    • Select which AutoPoster workspace you want ChatGPT to manage.
    • Click Allow Access.
  4. You are redirected back to ChatGPT with your accounts connected!

ChatGPT will immediately list your connected channels (e.g. your LinkedIn Profile, Twitter handle, Instagram Business page).

3 Powerful Workflows to Try

Workflow 1: Multi-Platform Announcement

"We just launched our new pricing plans today! Write a punchy announcement for X (under 280 chars) and a longer, storytelling post for LinkedIn with 3 bullet points. Schedule both for 2 PM today."

ChatGPT validates the character counts, formats platform-specific variations, and calls createPost with the scheduled time.

Workflow 2: Repurpose a Newsletter or Blog Post

"Here is the text of our weekly newsletter paste text. Extract 3 key takeaways and create 3 separate draft posts for human review in AutoPoster."

Because they are created as drafts, your marketing team can review and polish them in the AutoPoster dashboard before they go out.

Workflow 3: Check Live Post Status

"Did my morning post go live on X and LinkedIn? If so, show me the live links."

ChatGPT calls getPost and returns the direct permalinks to your published posts.

Built-In Safety and Guardrails

When giving an AI model access to your public social accounts, safety is critical:

  • Drafts by Default: AutoPoster can save posts as drafts or pending_approval so a human always has final sign-off.
  • Workspace Isolation: ChatGPT only has access to the single workspace you authorize during OAuth.
  • Revocable Access: You can revoke ChatGPT's token at any time in AutoPoster Dashboard → Settings → AI Agents & MCP.

Summary

Connecting ChatGPT to social media via Custom Actions turns your conversational assistant into an autonomous marketing engine.

No more copy-pasting text, no more switching browser tabs, and no more lost post ideas.
