How to Hide Comments on Instagram (and Stop Spam Automatically) in 2026
Hide, filter and limit Instagram comments with built-in settings, then automate it: how AI moderation hides spam, bots and abuse across every account.
A crypto bot under your newest Reel, a fake giveaway account replying to every customer question, a troll who shows up whenever a post takes off. If you run a business or creator account on Instagram, you've seen all three this week.
Deleting every bad comment by hand doesn't scale. This guide covers what Instagram gives you for free, where those tools run out, and how to automate the rest.
1. Hide a single comment
To deal with one comment:
- Open the post and find the comment.
- Swipe left on it (iPhone) or tap and hold it (Android).
- Pick the action you need: delete it, restrict the person, or report it. On recent app versions you can also hide it so only the author still sees it.
Delete or hide? Deleting removes the comment for everyone, and the author may notice it's gone and post again. Hiding is quieter: the author still sees their comment, so they're less likely to come back angrier.
2. Filter comments automatically with Hidden Words
Instagram's built-in filter lives under Settings → Hidden Words:
- Hide comments: hides comments that may be offensive. It's on by default for most accounts.
- Advanced comment filtering: hides more comments that look like spam or low quality.
- Custom words and phrases: add words, phrases or emojis you never want to see. Comments that contain them are hidden.
This catches the obvious cases. The catch: it only matches what you list. Spammers swap a letter, add an emoji or switch to a new scam, and your list is out of date again.
3. Limit who can comment
During a pile-on, Settings → Limits temporarily restricts comments from accounts that don't follow you or followed you recently. Under Comments, you can also choose who's allowed to comment at all.
These settings are blunt: they also block new customers who just found you. Use them to stop an attack, not as everyday moderation.
Where Instagram's built-in tools run out
| Problem | Built-in tools |
|---|---|
| New spam patterns | Only caught if you already listed the words |
| Several accounts | Settings and lists set up account by account |
| Questions buried between spam | No way to tell questions apart from everything else |
| Facebook, YouTube and other networks | Each network has its own separate settings |
| Undo mistakes | Hidden comments scattered across posts |
4. Automate it with AI comment moderation
AI moderation reads every comment the way a human would. It doesn't look for keywords; it decides what the comment is.
In AutoPoster AI's Social Inbox, every new comment is classified as question, praise, neutral, spam, troll or abuse. Then your rules take over:
- Spam, trolls and abuse are hidden or deleted automatically, on Instagram, Facebook and YouTube.
- You set a minimum confidence. Anything the AI is unsure about goes to a Flagged tab for a human, so it's never acted on automatically.
- Your own blocklist still works: add words that should always count as spam.
- One-click restore: hidden comments stay in an Auto-moderated tab, so nothing disappears for good by mistake.
Because questions are tagged too, real customers stop getting lost between bots. You can answer them with AI replies grounded in your own knowledge base: shipping, prices, opening hours.
Moderation costs 1 AI credit per 25 comments checked, and the Social Inbox is included in the Brand and Business plans. See how Instagram comment management works →
Quick checklist
- Turn on Hidden Words and Advanced comment filtering.
- Add your top 20 spam words and emojis to the custom list.
- Keep Limits ready for pile-ons.
- If you manage several accounts or get more than a few dozen comments a day, move moderation into one inbox with AI moderation.
